Ghana’s December 7, 2024, elections were a pivotal moment for the nation, but in the Ekumfi District, a brewing controversy threatens to overshadow the democratic process. Polling agents recruited by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ekumfi District have not yet receive their allowances, despite the funds reportedly being delivered to the district executives. This delay has left many agents frustrated and questioning the integrity of their leaders.
The youth in Ekumfi District are disappointed in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and are asking, "What would they have gained if the Parliamentary Candidate, Hon. Okumkom Donkor had won the seat? would he ignore them? Would he even listen to their cry?", if he has been able to do this to them. They are seeing this as a red flag and a big sign that the parliamentary candidate cannot be trusted.
The situation took a suspicious turn when district executives, upon learning that the unpaid agents were planning a press conference to expose the issue, hastily visited nine communities to distribute 200 Ghana Cedis to some agents. Critics argue that this move was a calculated attempt to create false evidence of payment, as the majority of agents remain unpaid.
At the center of the controversy is the district’s parliamentary candidate, Hon. Okumkom Donkor (Mentioned Above) , whose silence on the matter has further fuelled tensions. The unpaid agents, who played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth electoral process, feel betrayed and are demanding accountability.
This incident raises serious concerns about transparency and fairness within the party.
Has this been what has always led to the downfall of the New Patriotic Party in the District?
As the agents prepare to voice their grievances publicly, the NPP faces mounting pressure to address the issue promptly and ensure that all agents are compensated fairly. The people of Ekumfi deserve better, and this situation serves as a stark reminder that the trust of those who serve democracy must never be taken for granted.
